How many spaces between the header and writing of the paper?

Hi, Sarah.  If you are using Microsoft Word then the header and text spaces should be instantly distinct and not actually require you to format spaces in between.  In your document, click on the "Insert" tab across the top ribbon.  A new ribbon will appear below that and about halfway across you will see "Header."  Click on that and then choose the one you want.  It will fill into the proper area for the Header and then the portion of the page where you type your text will be automatic.

There are certain differences about the Header itself that are dictated by the style you are using (MLA, APA, etc.).  We have a page with different video and text tutorials that might be helpful with that:
